Student pilot certificates are issued through IACRA, not the school’s front desk

A common first-week surprise: your flight school cannot simply print a student pilot certificate. The Federal Aviation Administration issues the certificate after an application in IACRA (Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application) or on paper FAA Form 8710-1.

Advisory Circular 61-141 explains how a certificated flight instructor (or other authorized official) accepts a student-pilot application. IACRA’s own help pages note that a temporary certificate appears only after identity checks and TSA vetting, and that you generally must be at least 14 to finish the process.

Practical takeaway

• Create an IACRA applicant account before you need solo privileges
• Bring government photo ID to the recommending instructor
• Do not plan a first solo around “the school will have my certificate tomorrow”
